Social media, in this era, is a great source of inspiration. If you are suffering from writer’s block or looking to read amazing modern poetry, Instagram can be one such platform that can come handy. It is the poetic art of some contemporary writers that have created a large and inspiring community over there. The following list will inform you about five such accounts that you should follow if you are into modern poetry.

 

  • Austin Kleon (@austinkleon)

Austin Kleon is an American writer with three New York Times best-selling books: Steal Like An Artist, Newspaper Blackout, and Show Your Work. He has also spoken at organizations such as Pixar, TEDx, and Google. He has a unique style of creating poetry through newspaper blackout technique – where he uses a black marker to censor most of the words written in an old news article and only revealing certain words to create a short poem.

 

  • Nayyirah Waheed (@nayyirah.waheed)

Waheed is the author of the poetry books Salt and Nejma. She has a loyal follower count on Instagram as both her books were highly praised and studied in schools. In an interview, she described herself as a “quiet poet” who started to write poetry at the tender age of eleven. Her poetry is known for being “minimalist” and powerful as they cover topics such as race, feminism, and identity.

 

  • R.M. Drake (@rmdrake)

Robert M. Drake is an American author known for his bestselling books Beautiful Chaos and Black Butterfly. He is also a social media phenomenon with 2.2 million followers. His poems deal with themes such as: heartbreak, self-love, etc. Some of his other popular books are: A Brilliant Madness, Science, Moon Theory, etc. 

 

  • R.H. Sin (@r.h Sin)

Reuben Holmes is an American poet commonly known as r.h. Sin.  He has a total of 1.9 million followers that includes celebrities including  Sam Smith, Halle Berry, Jennifer Lopez, etc. Some of his popular poetry books are: The Whiskey Words & a Shovel series,  She Felt Like Feeling Nothing, A Beautiful Composition of Broken, etc.

 

  • Tyler Knott Gregson  (@ tylerknott)

The author of the Typewriter series, Tyler Knott Gregson is a Montana based poet.  His interesting story behind the series is that he found an old typewriter in an antique shop in the town Helena and that has made him write a poem every single day.  He said, “I just did it all at once and it was like a stream of consciousness, I didn’t plan it or think it through—I just let it go.” His popular books include Miracle in the Mundane, Be Bold, Be Brave, Love Notes, etc.
